Deployment of the Hispasat 30W-6 satellite from the Falcon 9 rocket

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launches at Cape Canaveral

The rocket first blasted off on June 4, 2010. Tonight, the company is tasked with sending up a hefty communications satellite for operator Hispasat, called Hispasat 30W-6.

Two of the rockets returned to a landing pad nearby as the third landed in the sea and was destroyed.

SpaceX will try once again to launch a Spanish satellite into space from Florida early Tuesday morning.

The rocket manufacturer pencilled in a two-hour launch window, starting at 12.33am EDT (5.33am GMT), after a pressurisation system issue postponed the launch. However, SpaceX was forced to scrap that launch attempt to do extra testing on the rocket's nose cone, or payload fairing. Deploying a payload to geostationary orbit requires much more fuel than low-Earth orbit, and the Hispasat 30W-6 weighs in at more than 6,000 kilograms (13,227 pounds).

Tuesday's launch was delayed from February 25 for tests of the pressurization system in the Falcon 9 rocket's nose cone, which worked as planned during the launch.

"Once complete, and pending range availability, we will confirm a new targeted launch date".

Live Stream: SpaceX will launch its live webcast at 11:45 p.m.

The Hispasat 30W-6 launch was the second of the missions SpaceX conducted for Spanish customers.

It only took the rocket manufacturer just over seven years to get to this stage. Fifty launches in less than eight years is a pretty good clip, by rocket standards. The total cost of a Falcon 9 launch is predicted to reach £44 million ($61m).

The Hispasat launch was originally scheduled shortly after the Paz mission.

Hispasat 30W-6, according to SpaceX, is the biggest, heaviest payload they have ever put in orbit.

The satellite will use its own propulsion system to circularize the orbit at an altitude of 22,000 miles above the equator. The satellite will help provide band capacity over a vast expanse of Earth including the Americas and the Mediterranean.
