Every Oculus Rift VR headset bricked due to expired certificate

Oculus Rift Fix

Oculus Rift users around the world encountered issues with their headsets on Wednesday as they were greeted by an error message when trying to use the VR technology. Over on the Oculus Rift support page, the following message is being displayed: "If you are using an Nvidia GPU and now experiencing display or performance issues with your Oculus Rift, please make sure you are using driver version 388.59". As of writing, it seems that you can only rely on a bit of peer support in the community forums (linked below).

Issues were first reported several hours ago on Reddit, where a post on the topic has already garnered hundreds of comments.

Today is the day the Oculus Rift died. Well, in a bit of classic Y2K-style wackiness, it turns out a certificate for the Oculus Runtime Service was allowed to expire earlier today. This issue is a bummer to gamers that aren't going to get to play the titles they've purchased until the issue is resolved, but it's a much less forgivable issue for commercial users who use the headset. Oculus is aware of the problem and is working on a fix.

If an expired certificate is the cause of the errors, Oculus will likely have to issue a patch in order to fix the problems.

It was recently confirmed that Rift had overtaken Vive as the most popular VR device on Steam. The problem appears to affect most, if not all, Oculus Rift headsets.
