Firefighters urge to check smoke detector batteries as the clock springs forward

The Montreal Fire Department wants residents to change their smoke alarm batteries twice a year

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, with area residents being reminded to set their clocks ahead by one hour at 2am.

You never want to see the fire department fighting flames at your home, but if fire sparks, it's important to have working smoke alarms. The SFMO urges all residents to determine how old their smoke alarms are (the date of manufacture is located on the back of the alarm).

"If your smoke alarms are older than 10 years in service, they need to be replaced as well", Zwiebel said.

Statistics show three out of five home fire deaths result from homes with no smoke alarm. And, in homes with working alarms that simply fail to operate, it is usually because of batteries were missing, disconnected, or dead. They are more expensive than regular alarms, but the cost of replacement batteries is typically covered over the life of the product.

Smoke detectors are getting "more efficient" as well, says Yancey.

According to Dan Hartman, communications program manager for the Western and Central New York Region of the Red Cross, since the program's inception, the non-profit has provided 198 free smoke detectors in Chautauqua County and 56 in Cattaraugus County.
