John Bailey Sexual Harassment: Academy President Under Investigation

The #MeToo and Time's Up initiatives were at the center of this year's Academy Awards, as host Jimmy Kimmel dedicated much of his opening monologue to addressing the sexual harassment and assault that's plagued Hollywood for years.

Two weeks after the annual Oscars ceremony, the Hollywood Reporter and Variety have reported that the Academy received three claims of sexual harassment against John Bailey, and had begun an investigation. Just seven months into a four-year term, if Bailey is forced to leave his position, the Academy's vice president, Lois Burwell, a veteran makeup artist, would take over until an election could be held in July. Boone Isaacs' tenure was marked by efforts to include more women and minorities in the academy's overwhelmingly older, white male membership, while Bailey's stint as president has pretty much coincided with the sexual misconduct scandals that have rocked Hollywood since Harvey Weinstein was accused of multiple misdeeds last fall.

Details of the sexual harassment allegations, including the names of the alleged victims, were not immediately released.

When reached for comment by CNN, the Academy said it "treats any complaints confidentially to protect all parties".

A subcommittee of the Academy board led by casting director David Rubin is heading up the investigation, according to Variety.

"The Membership Committee reviews all complaints brought against Academy members according to our Standards of Conduct process, and after completing reviews, reports to the Board of Governors", the statement said.

Bailey did not respond to a request for comment.

In December, the Academy adopted a code of conduct for its members. They are the only husband-wife board members in Academy history after founding AMPAS members Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford.

Calls and emails to Hudson and Bailey were not immediately returned.

The veteran United States movie director and cinematographer was elected to the four-year term as president of the Academy in August and has overseen the backlash against sexual misconduct in Hollywood following the Harvey Weinstein scandal.
