United mistakenly flies Kansas-bound dog to Japan

United has issued a statement apologising for the incident.

It comes as a heartbroken family's dog died on-board a United plane earlier this week.

"Violators will face significant fines".

Senators John Kennedy, a Republican, and Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat, said the legislation would direct the Federal Aviation Administration to create regulations to prohibit the storing of a live animal in any overhead compartment and to impose civil fines for violations.

United has repeatedly apologized and says it's taking full responsibility for what happened.

He cited figures from the Transportation Department that of the 24 animals that died on USA carriers previous year, 18 were on United flights.

The Chicago-based airline said a flight attendant who ordered the passenger to put her pet carrier in the overhead bin aboard a Houston-to-New York flight Monday didn't know there was a dog inside. A flight attendant had insisted the dog's owner put the pet carrier, with the dog inside, in an overhead bin.

"I was like 'It's a dog, it's a dog". It said it is investigating the flight and speaking to the flight attendant. They're trained to know what's safe and not safe during flight.

United said Tuesday that it took full responsibility for the incident on the Monday night flight from Houston to NY.

The dog, a black French bulldog that was traveling in a pet carrier, was placed in the compartment shortly before United Flight 1284 left Houston for NY around 6 p.m. Monday, said Maggie Gremminger, 30, who was seated behind the pet owner.
