Washington becomes first state to pass net neutrality law after FCC repeal

"We know that when D.C. fails to act, Washington state has to do so", Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said before signing the measure, the Associated Press reported. Washington state has stepped up to become the first to fully thumb its nose to the FCC by passing its own Net Neutrality protections.

Washington, home to tech giants Amazon and Microsoft, is the first state to pass a net neutrality law, negating the federal government's rollback of that internet-guiding policy.

The bill received strong bipartisan support in both chambers of the Legislature, overcoming the objections of opponents who said the state should wait for Congress to enact nationwide legislation. In December, the FCC reversed these net neutrality rules and last month published its new order in the Federal Register.

In order to create level playing field for all content creators and to overrule the control of the internet service provider, Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington signed a bill related that sets the rules for the net neutrality in the U.S.; thus becoming the first state in the USA to have its own net neutrality act. Washington also has authority to protect residents under its Consumer Protection Act. "It's allowed the free flow of information and ideas in one of the greatest demonstrations of free speech in our history".

Oosthuizen grabs first-round lead at WGC Mexico Championship
Consider Paisley, who describes himself on his Twitter account as a "diminutive golfer from Newcastle, the anti-DJ". Those results came off a superb end to the year, where he won the silverware in three out of his last six stars.

Inslee said he's confident the states are within their rights to regulate internet service even though the FCC says no.

The law will prohibit companies that offer internet services from blocking legal content, applications, services or non-harmful devices. And multiple governors, including in NY and Montana, have signed executive actions that prohibit internet service providers with state contracts from blocking or slowing data on their lines.

Ron Main, executive director of the Broadband Communications Association of Washington, which opposed the bill, said the cable companies his group represents have already pledged not to block legal content or engage in paid prioritization. The FCC's net neutrality repeal, however, isn't exactly a federal law, but a regulation from a federal agency. Washington's law will take effect June 6; however, the FCC's changes to its rules go into effect next month. It's likely ISPs will sue Washington state to find out if that works.
