Mexican film students killed, dissolved in acid

Genetic remains of three film students kidnapped last month in the western Jalisco state have revealed that they were later killed and their bodies dissolved in acid, official say. A great part of the protesters is refusing to believe the government's version of the event, and comparing it to the "historical truth" given by Mexico's prosecutor about the 43 students that have been missing since 2014. In Mexico City, a protest will begin at 4 p.m. local time Tuesday at the Independence Angel, one of the city's landmarks for political meetings. 3 students are killed and dissolved in acid.

Academy Award winning director Guillermo del Toro, who is a native of Guadalajara, expressed outrage on social media in response to the killings. "The "why" is unthinkable, and the "how" is frightening". The trio was kidnapped by at least six people, Jalisco state prosecutors said.

Three vanished film students whose case had become emblematic of Mexico's 30,000 missing people were killed after being caught unaware in the midst of a drug gang turf battle, officials say.

Prosecutors said they arrested two people in connection with the deaths and believe a total of eight people were involved.

"Without knowing it, the students were in a very unsafe place which was being watched by hit men from the New Generation cartel", the prosecutor's office said.

The internet was awash with denunciations and somber reflections on the wave of violence and impunity that has overtaken Mexico, where a record number of homicides were reported a year ago and where "disappearances" of people are a distressingly regular occurrence. Homicides hit their highest level in records going back 20 years.

The staggering rise in violence has been attributed to a range of issues, including rising in gang violence, stealing of fuel, kidnappings, extortion and other criminal activities.

Condolences for the victims' families also came in from the country's film institute and candidates in the July 1 presidential elections.
