The Cowboys took Leighton Vander Esch of Boise State with the 19th pick in the first round of the draft Thursday night. What's impressive is what the Eagles gained in the exchange.

The Ravens traded two second-round picks (one in 2019) and swapped fourth-round picks to get the 32nd spot from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Ravens used the pick to take Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Leading up to the draft, some National Football League teams considered Jackson a potential wide receiver prospect at the pro level, but he strictly considers himself a QB.

Roseman says he felt the value was right, and the team won't hesitate to make more deals to move around the draft. This is only speculation, but it's likely the other players the Ravens were considering at 16 were FSU safety Derwin James, who inexplicably fell despite being considered by many as the top DB in the draft, and WRs Calvin Ridley (Alabama) and D.J. Moore (Maryland). "This doesn't really change things in a sense that we're going to go with Joe and he's going to roll". The Baltimore Ravens selected Oklahoma Offensive Tackle Orlando Brown Jr.at pick 83 after they traded down and then followed that up with the selection of Oklahoma Tight End Mark Andrews at pick 86 after trading down again.

Head coach John Harbaugh said Newsome remained focused and unflappable throughout the three-day process, but "at the very last pick, Ozzie did get emotional", he said. Solid move by the Ravens.

And they have no desire to actually upend a system that - by their own report - is so flawed that it may implode at any moment. Now that we've established a baseline, the problem is finding a way to fix it under the umbrella of the current system.

After falling to the bottom of the first round, Jackson was asked whether he had a chip on his shoulder. It was highly unlikely that the Bengals were looking to seriously draft Jackson but more so doing their due diligence on the young quarterback. "It's not often you get the opportunity to pick up an extra second-round pick".

"We have a great quarterback in Joe Flacco".

Assistant general manager Eric DeCosta, who will succeed Newsome as GM, choked up as he spoke of Newsome making his final pick, and noted that in a fitting gesture, owner Steve Bisciotti switched Newsome's and DeCosta's chairs in the Ravens draft room.

"You have to be careful about that, ascribing traits to a guy just because of the school that he came from", Garrett said.

STILL NEED: The Ravens are fine with running back Alex Collins but hoped to find at least one backup in the draft.
