Russian Corporation Opens First Nuclear Plant in Turkey

Turkey and Russian Federation will continue to work for peace and stability in the region, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated, according Turkish media.

Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, Erdogan welcomed Putin with an official ceremony in the capital.

"I wish that all our meetings benefit the whole of our region", Erdogan said at a meeting of the High-Level Cooperation Council, which takes place in Ankara under the chairmanship of the Presidents of Russian Federation and Turkey.

Erdogan said that Turkish energy sector - which is still predominantly based on petroleum, natural gas and coal- would be healthier along with the Akkuyu NPP, Anadolu Agency reports.

The Akkuyu plant will consist of four reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, and in the first phase will be built two units, the first of which is scheduled to go into operation in 2023 and the plant as a whole It will be two years later. When Akkuyu starts operating with all its reactors we will cover 10% of our country's electrical needs.

During the video teleconference, Russian President Vladimir Putin said "The successful implementation of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant will be a symbol of the dynamic development of Turkish-Russian partnership".
