Tour bus crashes on way to Masters Tournament; driver facing DUI charge

Several people were injured Thursday morning when a charter bus en route to the Masters crashed on Interstate 20 west of Augusta, the Georgia State patrol confirmed to multiple media outlets.

The Masters Tournament, held each year at the Augusta National Golf Club, starts Thursday. He says some patients may require operations and added that none of the injuries appear to be life threatening.

Nine victims were taken to Doctors Hospital in Augusta; one person is in critical condition, one victim is in serious condition, and one patient is in fair condition, the hospital said. The motorist, 61-year-old Steven F. Hoppenbrouwer, has been charged with driving under the influence.

The bus, which was carrying a group from Atlanta to the tournament, is owned by Jet Executive Limousine, troopers said. The bus driver has been charged with driving under the influence.

Physicians Hospital in Augusta claimed in a statement Thursday that six of the eight passengers obtained there have been in very good shape or had been dealt with and released.

Passenger Kip Plowman said the first time the bus swerved, the driver said he turned to avoid "a tire or a piece of metal in the road".
