Trump attorney is focus of 'monthslong' investigation into personal dealings

Cohen is Trump's personal lawyer

Attorneys separately representing President Donald Trump and his longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, argued Friday that the Justice Department should be blocked from reviewing communications between Trump and Cohen.

"Mr. Trump, Mr. Cohen and their teams were still scrambling on Friday to assess the damage from the raid early Monday morning", The Times.

Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, has said she was paid US$130,000 by Cohen to keep quiet about a sexual encounter with Trump, and is fighting to lift the terms of the non-disclosure act, which she says was signed by Cohen but not by Trump.

The tweet referred to in the Journal's report is one Cohen posted of a photo of the front of an American passport - an image that obviously doesn't constitute evidence of anything at all, much less the dossier's claims being false.

Cohen, though, would often make light of his legal acumen, as a former Cooley Law School classmate, Greg Crockett explained.

Prosecutors emphasized that their investigation was focused on Cohen's business dealings, not his work as a lawyer. The President has repeatedly denied collusion. This includes investigating any potential ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation. Among those recordings: conservations between Cohen and an attorney for two women who both received hush money to hide their alleged affairs with Donald Trump.

Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, argues that the court must first decide if there even is an agreement and has asked for limited discovery, including depositions of Trump and Cohen and production of certain documents, in order to prove there is not.

"Confirmation of the trip would lend credence to a retired British spy's report that Cohen strategized there with a powerful Kremlin figure about Russian meddling in the US election".

"This has clearly been a delay tactic from the outset", said Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas McKay. Broidy said he retained Cohen because Cohen had a prior relationship with Davidson. In a footnote in its filing, the prosecutors expressed doubt that any communications between Trump and Cohen regarding a payoff to Daniels before the election would be covered under attorney-client privilege.

A lawyer for Daniels, Michael Avenatti, suggested his customer may function as the niche of some of those supplies, as well as her pursuits wanted coverage also. Her impatience at their failure to do so was palpable by late afternoon.

"It is common for a civil case to be stayed under these circumstances, and that is what we will be requesting of the US District Court tomorrow", Blakely said in an email.

"The government is investigating whether there was, in connection with Trump's White House bid, a conspiracy to commit fraud and extortion for the objective of silencing potentially compromising sources - specifically, people in a position to portray Donald Trump as a womanizer", McCarthy, a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, said.
