Rooney, capped 119 times by England, rejoined his boyhood club Everton at the start of the season on a two-year deal after 13 trophy-laden years at Manchester United.

"My understanding of the situation is there seems to have been some negotiation somewhere along the line", said Allardyce.

David Moyes believes the Premier League will be losing the last of the "street footballers" if Wayne Rooney opts to leave Everton for D.C. United.

"We still, I think, need another goalscorer that gets 15 or more goals in the Premier League next season".

The Croxteth-born player is believed to have been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season, although the U.S. transfer window only opens in July.

"We talk to the player about that situation, whoever it might be, and say levels have to be lifted".

Allardyce muttered darkly about not being able to play him alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson, Everton's other marquee summer signing, while at the same time complaining that Rooney did not get into the box enough. If the player wants to leave - if any player does - I'm comfortable with it.

There had been suggestions Rooney had demanded the guarantee of regular football next season, but Allardyce rubbished that idea. I have a one-year contract.

United is prepared to pay him between US$5 million and US$8 million per season (NZ$7 million to NZ$11.5 million), said a well-connected figure who requested anonymity in order to speak about the negotiations.
