Her win against Crowley will have given fresh hope to Bernie Sanders supporters expecting him to stand in 2020.

A 28-year-old socialist has shaken up NY politics and sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party by defeating 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley in the party's congressional primary. Focussing on economic justice, Medicare for All, and the abolition of US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ocasio-Cortez spent the final weekend of the campaign not ringing doorbells in her district but instead confronting ICE agents at a detention center on the Texas border.

"The message that we send the world tonight is that it's not OK to put donors before your community", Ocasio-Cortez said in her victory speech, CNN reported.

Shapiro said she is a member of the "howling at the moon branch of the Democratic Party" that "throws out radical proposals" and then claims "moral clarity lies in making proposals that are completely untenable and never will be paid for".

Her stunning victory was no surprise to those who knew Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during her years as a student at Boston University.

If she wins the reliably Democratic district in November, it will make her the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Ocasio-Cortez is a self-described socialist who updates her Instagram feed on her own phone.

"I'm an organizer in this community, and I knew living here and being here and seeing and organizing with families here, that it was possible", Ocasio-Cortez after her victory.

Some campaign pros say that as much as she won, they believe the incumbent, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.), managed to lose.

Ocasio-Cortez has consistently hit Crowley for not accurately representing the district. "I think that really served her well in undergrad; I think it's gonna serve her even better now that's she the Democratic nominee for Congress".

Ms Ocasio-Cortez will now face Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November mid-terms.

"The increased militarization and willingness to commit human rights abuses - we are at that point", she said. Driven nearly entirely by young people, the campaign brought together seasoned activists, many of them DSA members, with people newly energised by Alexandria's passionate championing of progressive ideals: "universal healthcare, abolishing ICE and taxing the rich".

Cynthia Nixon, the actor running to dethrone Andrew Cuomo as New York's governor and also forms part of the "Pink Wave" of female candidates seeking political positions, seems to agree. "We may see him in the public sector again".

When a reporter asked Pelosi if "Democratic House leadership" should "look that way" toward an increasingly "younger, more female, more diverse, more progressive" Democratic Party, Pelosi replied, "Well, I'm female, I'm progressive".

The Sanders-style Democrat ran on a socialist platform far to the left of Crowley.

"We define a mass shooting to be an incident of violence in which 4 or more people are shot", the website says.

Greer noted the big differences between Ocasio-Cortez's race and the gubernatorial primary, and said Cuomo's move to the left shows he recognizes the risk of a progressive insurgency, even if he won't admit it.
