Hamilton gets new engine but Mercedes won't say which one

Starting third behind Hamilton and Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, Vettel tried to use his faster set of tires to make a good start.

Stewards announced an immediate investigation into the collision between Bottas and Vettel, with video replays showing the German had locked up and hit the rear of the Finn's vehicle as they jostled for position.

Vettel, at the back after a pit stop to fix the front wing damaged in the crash with Bottas made light work of the backmarkers, starting with a light tap as he passed Fernando Alonso's McLaren at Turn Three at the re-start, which nudged the Spaniard into a spin.

Max Verstappen hit back at his critics after Sunday's F1 French Grand Prix after coming under fire for crashes earlier in the season while Sebastian Vettel -in his mind at least- seems to always escape criticism for his own misdemeanors.

Vettel took the soft tyres and emerged in 17th, his race already reduced to damage limitation.

"My mistake", he told the media. "When I walked into the garage to put my helmet on I saw the screen and it was 6-0 at the time and when I went out to the track for three laps before the grid and going to the toilet I saw again it was 6-1 but jeez that is a mighty score".

"I'm not going to hold back on it because I really feel like that".

"I think I've got more downforce than everyone else, so passing on the straights won't be that easy".

"I did push everything in the last attempt but pushed too much", said Vettel. Just the wrong place.

"It really struck me l saw him photographing his own vehicle earlier. I think tomorrow we still have a chance".

"But was it intentional?" Alonso was a grumpy man throughout the race having been at the lower end of the timing screens for the entire afternoon.

Fernando Alonso, victor of the 24 Hour Le Mans last week, failed to get out of the first qualifying section, which culls the slowest five drivers, along with McLaren partner Stoffel Vandoorne and both Williams cars.

"Five seconds is nothing".

Lewis Hamilton topped both practice sessions. "The weather has been good and good to see so many people here".

Finally, the star of qualifying, Charles Leclerc, made a few small errors which cost him a few positions but he would still claim his fourth points finish in five races in P10 for Sauber.

Shock: The amount of overtakes during the race.

Despite his first lap problems, Vettel was still crowned the Driver of the Day in France. However, debris damaged his front wing after his one and only pitstop.

"I don't know", Raikkonen replied when asked what had happened in Q3. If it doesn't rain.well, don't say you were not warned. "Obviously I was pretty disappointed with the end result. If the wind was the other way around, I think it would have been more hard".

Ferrari's championship leader Sebastian Vettel, a point ahead of the Briton after seven of 21 races, qualified in third place.
