Russian Federation should be invited back to the summits of leading advanced countries, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for the Group of Seven meeting in Canada.

In the wake of the reports about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and the ongoing investigation into whether the Kremlin colluded with the Trump campaign, the president faced some severe pushback for his suggestion to welcome Russia back.

Peskov's comments come a day after Trump called for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the group of the world's leading nations, known as the G7, a step that would end Russia's global isolation over its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

The Italian prime minister was due to meet the leaders of France, Germany and the UK before the main summit in a session seen as a European "huddle" created to present a united front to President Trump, who has imposed trade tariffs on the EU and disagrees with the bloc over a nuclear deal with Iran. "I am heading for Canada and the G-7 for talks that will mostly center on the longtime unfair trade practised against the United States".

Macron and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who also sought friendship with Trump, made it clear they would prefer no consensus to a climbdown on trade.

Trump's comments came he prepared to leave for the G7 gathering in Canada, where he will miss at least some of the summit's second day.

The Austrian government has offered to host a summit between Trump and Putin, potentially echoing a historic Cold War meeting there between a newly-elected President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, according to a White House official who was granted anonymity to discuss the matter. "One of the promises was to improve US-Russian relations".

The president also told advisers that he thinks attending the Group of Seven summit in rural Charlevoix, Quebec, was not a good use of his time because other world leaders attending oppose his policies and he "does not want to be lectured by them", The Washington Post reported, citing a trio of sources.

"We will continue to demonstrate that we're interested in defending Canadian interests and, on top of that, it turns out I'm defending American interests because these tariffs they're putting forward are going to hurt American workers as well", Trudeau said Thursday.

Trump will skip part of the summit on Saturday as he travels to Singapore to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in hopes of resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis.
