Apple Music Passes Spotify in Total U.S. Subscriber Numbers

Spotify still leads outside of the USA, tallying 75 million subscribers as part of its first earnings report in May.

Apple Music has reportedly surpassed Spotify in terms of paying subscribers in the United States, a feat that only needed time to happen due to the higher growth rate of Apple's music streaming service.

According to an exclusive report by Digital Music News, Apple Music now has more US paying subscribers than Spotify, citing a USA -based major distributor. Spotify falls into the same bracket, but has now dropped into second place when it comes to popularity.

Apple Music seems to have a strong growth route indicating the gap between Apple's music streaming service and Spotify to likely widen over the course of the next several months. And the more credible Financial Times reports that the Apple Music subscriber base, at 21 to 21.5 million, is still slightly behind Spotify's, at 22 to 22.5 million. However, this comparison also indicates Apple Music is more popular in the U.S. than Spotify. Though the iPhone X's sales haven't quite lived up to Apple's expectations, the company's success in other parts of their business is undeniable.

Apple is likely to draw about US 27 million users by the end of the year, with Spotify expected to have 24 million.

Eyes and ears have been on Spotify for its major strides in the music streaming world. The paper calculated that Spotify was growing at 2% per month while Apple Music was at 5%.

However, this comparison also indicates Apple Music is more popular in the U.S. than Spotify. Spotify claimed 75 million paying customers at the end of March, whereas Apple claimed 50 million, a number that is skewed upward because many of those were on free trials.
