Pompeo will stay in Pyongyang for two days, according to The Chosun Ilbo, and discuss North Korea's dismantlement of a specified amount of nuclear weapons with a specified time frame. Pompeo joked once the meeting started that if he comes again after this, his third trip to North Korea this year, he will have to start paying taxes.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea on Thursday to talk about denuclearization.
The talks lasted almost three hours and it was uncertain whether Pompeo would meet Kim Jong Un.
But that does mark a shift from the U.S.'s earlier demands for North Korea's "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization".
Some officials in the State and Defense Departments and in US intelligence agencies are anxious that Trump has put himself at a disadvantage by overstating the results of the Singapore summit. "Our policy toward North Korea has not changed", Reuters quoted Nauert as telling reporters en route to Pyongyang.
But the US ability to verify the accuracy of any North Korean list is limited due to the lack of a "high confidence" accounting of the North's nuclear arsenal, such as the number of warheads and uranium enrichment facilities, especially if they are not operational, they said.
It says pressure will remain until North Korea denuclearizes, but in statements this week, it redefined the USA goal as "the final, fully verified denuclearization" of the country.

The CD is a reference to the nickname - "little rocket man" - that Trump gave Kim a year ago as the US and North Korea edged toward nuclear catastrophe.
Friday's meetings took place at the Paekhwawon, or 100 Flowers Garden, an elite guesthouse where former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stayed in 2000.
The U.S. delegation includes several State Department officials and other members of the administration.
Citing "sources in Washington", the paper said Trump signed the CD with a message for Kim, since the song came up in conversation during their summit last month.

In the meantime, Mr Pompeo and Mr Trump have vowed to keep in place the global economic sanctions that they believe forced the North to the negotiating table in the first place.
The United States hopes to maintain momentum amid news reports, based on USA intelligence sources, that the secretive North is continuing its nuclear activity.
