Mexico leftist vows no tolerance on corruption after historic win

President-elect Lopez Obrador is estimated to have received over 53% of the vote, more than double the total of his closest rival, according to the country's electoral commission. "That is what brought us to this".

After the announcement, Current President Enrique Peña Nieto congratulated the 64-year veteran politician and offered him support to make an orderly and efficient transition.

Lopez Obrador's coalition will have a majority in the lower house, and possibly in the Senate as well, according to the firm's exit polls - a coup for a party contesting its first national elections.

Trump has accused Mexico of sending criminals and rapists into the United States and is nearly universally disliked in Mexico.

Seeking to soothe, he has recruited a team of market-friendly advisers and backpedaled on his most controversial proposals, including reversing outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto's landmark energy reform, which privatized the oil sector.

In his victory speeches, Lopez Obrador called on Mexicans to reconcile and said his government would not be a "committee in service to a minority" but would represent all citizens rich and poor, religious or nonbelievers, migrants, "human beings of all manner of thought and all sexual preferences".

Lopez Obrador triumphed with a party that didn't exist at the time of the last election, against opponents from two parties that have ruled Mexico for almost a century.

Consulta Mitofsky for broadcaster Televisa showed Mr Lopez Obrador, who had maintained a healthy lead in polls ahead of the vote, winning between 43 per cent and 49 per cent of the vote. "The anger that the average Mexican feels toward the way things are being governed has favored Lopez Obrador", said Shannon O'Neil, senior fellow for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. "He's been able to capture the mantle of the person who's on the outside who wants change".

Campaigning relentlessly around Mexico for the past 13 years, Lopez Obrador has watched political careers rise and fall as established parties were consumed by the country's social and economic problems and the responsibility of power.

He also pledged to increase support payments for the elderly and to give scholarships or paid apprenticeships to young people.

Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador talks to reporters as he departs after casting his ballot at a polling station during the presidential election in Mexico City, Mexico, July 1, 2018.

Josefina Serrano, 44, who rode eight hours from Sacramento on a bus organized for voters, said she voted for Lopez Obrador because she was exhausted of corruption and violence in Mexico, as well an anti-Mexican attitude in the United States. Obrador, like Trump, has painted himself as an outsider who is singularly positioned to purge the Mexican government of corruption and waste, and vows to fight the criminality endemic in Mexican governmental institutions. "That's why I tell Mexicans today the result's information we have now favors Andres Manuel", said Anaya. Fernando Herrera Silva, a member of the ruling PRI party, was gunned down in Acolihuia, in the central state of Puebla, his party said.

Anaya has tried to harness the youth vote with an emphasis on technology and new ideas, but he divided his own conservative party to take its candidacy and it's unclear if his new allies in the leftist Democratic Revolution Party will actually turn out for someone from the other end of the ideological spectrum.

"This is a historic day", Lopez Obrador said as he voted Sunday.
