But as for what we do know: today, Netflix released the first image of Colman as Her Majesty, and it is pretty much ideal.

Olivia replaces the utterly brilliant Claire Foy as Lizzie, a role which bagged her a Golden Globe for the Netflix series in 2017.

Colman takes over the role as Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy for seasons three and four which will be set in the 60s and early 70s.

Helena Bonham Carter will take over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret and Tobias Menzies replaces Matt Smith as Prince Philip in the next series of the drama.

Asked if she had started watching footage of the Queen to prepare for the role, she said previous year: "Not yet". And, since The Crown isn't likely to release episodes from the new season until late 2018, we're definitely going to need some patience!

Olivia Colman will be seen as the Queen in the third season of the show. "You can't ask someone to act middle-aged", Peter Morgan told Variety.

The photo, uploaded to the series' official Twitter account, features Her Majesty sitting down for a cup of tea, wearing a slightly concerned look on her face and her signature pearls around her neck. 'The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds'. And she's also an incredibly wonderful human being, so I just think it's great.

Season 3 is now in production, but does not yet have a confirmed release date.
