Park Sung-hyun Wins 2nd LPGA Major in Dramatic Fashion

Park Sung-hyun won the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Sunday, defeating Ryu So-yeon in a tense playoff at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in IL.

Park collected her second major with a birdie on the second playoff hole to defeat So Yeon Ryu on Sunday at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

The 24-year-old Park won the 2017 US Women's Open. The latest win is Park's second victory of this season since she won the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic in May.

After taking a penalty stroke, Ryu put her third shot to the fringe well behind the pin and two-putted from there for her second double bogey of the round.

But Ryu's tee shot on No. 17 went into the water to the left of the green, setting up the three-way tie.

Jessica Korda watches her putt on the 17th hole during the second round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship golf tournament at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Ill., Friday, June 29, 2018. She finished T10 at the U.S. Women's Open and T6 at the ANA Inspiration. Brooke Henderson (74) - second through three rounds - was 5 under.

Ryu capitalised with back-to-back birdies at the 14th and 15th holes to take a two-stroke lead of her own and that became three at the end. In a sign of LPGA parity, the world's No. 3 player, the Women's PGA defending champion and one of the LPGA's most high-profile stars teed off at 7:19 a.m. - the first group -Sunday.

Park was consistent when it counted and didn't make a single bogey over the last 30 holes of the tournament.

The ball landed two feet from the hole, and Park converted the putt to save par on what could have just as easily ended her hope to win.

"It was a really long round today and I still can't believe I'm sitting next to this trophy", Park said. It was not the finish she was looking for at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Illinois - just outside Chicago.

But while clubhouse leaders Park and Ryu awaited their playoff tied at 10-under-par, Japanese teenager Nasa Hataoka nearly rewrote the script, coming from nowhere with a final round 64 to join them in the sudden-death shootout. But I think confidence is a huge thing for me, where the swing itself is not too different. "Keep improving and one day I want to lift that trophy". With the win, she took home total prize money of $547,500.

"To be honest, I got less nervous during the playoff", she said.

"After the front nine, I couldn't actually expect to be leading after the third round", she said.

Hataoka rolled her putt way right and was eliminated from contention.
