Trump responds to Cohen taping: 'Your favourite president did nothing wrong'

Stormy Daniels’ lawyer again demands release of Cohen’s alleged Trump tapes following NYT report

"Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of", Trump tweeted.

As first reported by New York Times, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is now in possession of at least one recorded conversation between Michael Cohen and Donald Trump regarding payment to Karen McDougal, 1998 Playmate of the Year, and now the second-most-famous-alleged-Trump-mistress. He said Trump did not know he was being recorded and claimed that the president had done nothing wrong. He said the tape would show that Trump makes clear that if there is going to be a payment, it should be done by check, which would be easily traced.

The recording was part of a large collection of documents and electronic records seized by earlier this year by federal authorities from Michael Cohen, the longtime Trump fixer.

Giuliani said no campaign funding was involved in the discussion between Trump and Cohen, who has distanced himself from Trump in recent months as the FBI investigates Cohen's business dealings.

President Trump derides his former attorney Michael Cohen, after reports say he taped conversations between himself and then-candidate Donald Trump. However, the episode raised the possibility that Mr Cohen secretly recorded other conversations with Mr Trump and senior campaign figures.

When questioned about the allegations, President Trump has denied the affair and said he had no knowledge of any payment. In New York state, it is legal to record a conversation if one party consents.

The recording cuts off with Trump mid-sentence, one person said, and picks up in the middle of a conversation Cohen is having with another person. Presumably Trump and Cohen wanted to take over the rights to the tape so that they could be sure about the scandal staying on the down low.

Later Lanny Davis, Cohen's newest attorney, put out a statement claiming that "when the recording is heard, it will not hurt Michael Cohen. Any attempt at spin can not change what is on the tape", Davis said in a statement on Friday.

Mr Cohen, who has not been charged, is reportedly under investigation for possible bank and tax fraud, as well as potential violation of election law.

The former model, Karen McDougal, said she began an almost yearlong affair with Mr Trump in 2006 shortly after his wife, Melania, gave birth to their son, Barron, the Times said.

It is unclear why Cohen and Trump sought to purchase the story from AMI and then did not complete the transaction.

The Wall Street Journal first reported four days before the November 2016 election that McDougal had been paid by the National Enquirer. In a CNN story earlier this month, a source close to Cohen indicated that "the truth is not you or your client's friend".

"We have no knowledge of any of this", she said.

According to CNN, "McDougal signed a contract with American Media Inc., the company that owns the National Enquirer, which barred her from publicly speaking about the alleged affair before the 2016 election".

In her lawsuit against AMI, McDougal said she was happy when AMI bought her story in August 2016 but did not publish it, because she was not anxious for publicity before the campaign.
