Major Hurricane Lane, a Category 4 storm, is heading toward Hawaii, forecasters warn

The hurricane was about 465 miles (804 kilometers) southeast of Honolulu before dawn Wednesday and The National Weather Service extended a hurricane warning for Hawaii's Big Island to include the island of Maui.

The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane watch for parts of Hawaii. Roofs and walls will collapse.

Is Lane Hawaii's most powerful hurricane ever?

Tropical-storm-force winds could arrive on Wednesday in the Big Island, and in the smaller islands by Thursday or Friday.

A hurricane warning in effect for Hawaii's Big Island was extended Wednesday to the island of Maui, The National Weather Service said.

Kauai resident Mike Miranda was 12 when Hurricane Iniki struck the island 26 years ago. Though Hurricane Lane is expected to weaken to a category 3 storm by Thursday afternoon, it is still forecasted to remain a unsafe storm as is draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands.

All public and charter schools and Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) offices on Hawaii Island and in Maui County will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 22, until further notice, in anticipation of risky storm conditions from Hurricane Lane.

Antibiotic delivered to wild killer whale in global rescue operation
Michael Milstein with NOAA Fisheries says experts plan to do a health assessment of the young whale if conditions allow. Tahlequah is not carrying that calf's body all by herself - members of her family have been helping her with her vigil.

More watches and even warnings could be necessary for additional islands as the storm moves closer in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.

Another hurricane is threatening to impact Hawaii this week, as risky Category 4 Hurricane Lane approaches the Central Pacific island chain just two weeks after Hurricane Hector passed the islands.

Rainfall of 51cm in some areas could lead to major flash flooding, landslides and mudslides, the NHC said. "Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion", according to the agency.

As Lane is expected to be slow-moving as it nears the islands, it will produce large and damaging surf. The red circle shows the location of the Hawaiian Islands; the magenta and purple line segments indicate where storms were at Category 4 or 5 strength, respectively. Please stand by for updates as UH campuses and non-essential operations on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi may also close as the storm approaches.
