Collectively dubbed the Mendocino Complex, the wildfires have burned through 283,800 acres (114,850 hectares) - an area almost the size of the sprawling city of Los Angeles - and are just 30 percent contained, according to state fire authority CalFire.

After a day of hot, dry winds fueled by a high-pressure system on Monday, progress was made on the smaller River Fire, as fire personnel reached 78 percent containment on the 48,920-acre blaze as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, a Cal Fire incident update said.

The Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco was still growing this week as it broke the record set eight months ago.

It was the second fire to break records in the fire-prone, most populous U.S. state in as many years, following the Thomas Fire in December 2017, which destroyed 281,893 acres.

"Because we're out here trying to save people's homes, and so you see some of the destruction the fire does", Pizano said. Within hours Monday, the blaze became the largest fire in California history, surpassing the Thomas Fire that burned two counties last year and the Cedar Fire that killed 15 people 15 years ago.

Where is the Mendocino Complex Fire?

The fire surrounds Clear Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in the state, a vital habitat for fish and other wildfire and a spot for water sports enthusiasts. But officials say it threatens 11,300 buildings and some new evacuations were ordered over the weekend as the flames spread.

The Carr fire is covering more than 160,000 acres and is 43 per cent contained.

Additional areas impacted by the Mendocino Complex Fire are seeing evacuations lifted.

Severe Flood Watches Issued As Cloudy Skies Loom And Rain Continues
Friday is still looking like the best day with highs in the upper 80s and rain chances sticking to a 40% chance through the day. A round of thunderstorms is projected for Friday afternoon into the evening, possibly featuring heavy rain and strong winds.

Crews will continue to work on tying in remaining containment lines on the River Fire, Cal Fire reported. In rural areas up north, what began as two small fires more than a week ago have grown at breathtaking speed to form the Mendocino Complex Fire, a massive and still-growing inferno that has charred an area nearly the size of Los Angeles.

Another blaze that erupted last week has damaged a historic Northern California resort in the Stanislaus National Forest.

On Monday, another fast-moving fire ignited in the state - this time in Orange County, where firefighters battled the Holy Fire that expanded to more than 4,000 acres.

A number of complex fires fill the list of the top 20 largest wildfires in California history, including the 192,038-acre Klamath Theater Complex Fire near the OR state line in June 2008. Seventy five residences have been destroyed.

According to Cal Fire, the Ranch Fire continues to grow in the north and south eastern directions, "threatening communities in the fire's path".

At 273,664 acres burned, the Mendocino Complex Fire now sits at number two of California's largest wildfires.

Experts say 2018 has the worst start to the fire season in 10 years - partly due to the 2012-2017 drought that killed off large amounts of vegetation.
