President Donald Trump on Monday defended his U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after a second woman came forward with an allegation of sexual misconduct against the judge that has further complicated his confirmation prospects in the Senate.

Hours later, however, The New Yorker magazine reported online that Senate Democrats were investigating another woman's accusation of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh, this time dating to the 1983-84 academic year, Kavanaugh's first at Yale University.

According to the New Yorker, Ramirez studied sociology and psychology at Yale and attended a dorm party in Lawrence Hall where Kavanaugh was also present.

Lawyers for the woman who's accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of a sexual assault decades ago when they were teenagers say they've accepted the Senate Judiciary Committee's request for her to tell her story. "I am issuing this statement today to make it clear to all involved that I have no knowledge of the party in question; nor do I have any knowledge of the allegations of improper conduct she has leveled against Brett Kavanaugh".

"This 35-year-old, uncorroborated claim is the latest in a coordinated smear campaign by the Democrats created to tear down a good man", Kupec said in a statement.

The new claim came hours after the Senate Judiciary Committee agreed to a hearing on Thursday after almost a week of uncertainty over whether Christine Blasey Ford would appear to testify about her earlier claim against Mr Kavanaugh.

Ford and Kavanaugh have agreed to testify, although Sen.

He began his career as a clerk to Anthony Kennedy, the justice long considered a critical swing vote on the Supreme Court, and will succeed him on the bench if confirmed.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegation made by Ramirez in a statement released through the White House, calling it "a smear, plain and simple". Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the committee, to immediately postpone confirmation proceedings until the FBI could investigate.

She made several requests, some of which were accommodated - a Thursday hearing, three days later than originally scheduled, and a smaller hearing room with less press access to avoid a media circus, for example.

"As Dr Ford has said, she did not share her story publicly or with anyone for years following the incident with Judge Kavanaugh", Katz said in a statement. They noted that other witnesses are "essential for a fair hearing".

A "short but very productive call" between Democratic and Republican members of the committee and Ford's attorneys yielded the agreement, according to one person familiar with the call.

The New Yorker was unable to confirm with eyewitnesses that Kavanaugh was at the party Ramirez described, though one classmate who was not at the party said that he is "one-hundred-per-cent sure" he was told Kavanaugh had exposed himself to Ramirez.

The lawyer acknowledged to CNN that Keyser is a lifelong friend of Ford's.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Grassley wrangled with Ford's lawyers for the last week over the exact terms of her appearance.

One Republican close to Kavanaugh's confirmation process who wasn't authorized to speak on the record, said "there's resolve in the White House". And I was never told this story by her, or by anyone else. And just seven weeks from an election in which Democrats are hoping to capture control of the House and maybe the Senate, her emergence has also drawn intensified attention to the #MeToo movement's focus on sexual abuse.
