Florence continues to wreak havoc on the Carolinas

"Five spots have preliminarily topped North Carolina's tropical cyclone rainfall record: Swansboro (33.90 inches), Hofmann Forest (25.87 inches), Sunny Point (27.22 inches), Nature Conservancy (26.77 inches) and Newport/Morehead City (25.20 inches)".

One of the towns worst affected is New Bern, which sits between the Neuse and Trent rivers in North Carolina. It said it was located about 60 miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and forecasters predicted a slow westward march.

In the past year, Florence marks the third tropical system to set a new state rainfall record after Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Lane in Hawaii.

-A 61-year-old woman was killed late Friday when the vehicle she was driving struck a tree near the town of Union, South Carolina, Capt. Kelley Hughes of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered ahead of Florence's landfall in parts of North and SC, though many people chose to remain in their homes for reasons ranging from financial concerns and the need to care for pets that they may not have been able to take to some evacuation shelters, some who stayed in their residences told ABC News ahead of the storm. "More than likely it's maybe a mindset of 'we've been through this before, '" he said.

More than 900 people were rescued from rising floodwaters and 15,000 remained in shelters in the state, Cooper said.

"When you can help your fellow man, you can get out there and do what you're trained to do, that's a great thing", Bill Reddon of the New York Fire Department said. Officials are already working to establish temporary housing options once the brunt of the storm has passed.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence's top sustained winds were holding at 45 miles per hour (75 kph), with higher gusts east of the storm's center.

Hurricane Florence on Friday claimed its first fatalities, including a mother and her baby, as the monster storm walloped the US East Coast and parked over the Carolinas, threatening days of torrential rain and severe flooding. They included three who died 'due to flash flooding and swift water on roadways, ' the Duplin County Sheriff's Office reported.

Flooding has made things hard in Hurricane Florence's aftermath.

North Carolina is bracing for what could be the next stage of the still-unfolding disaster: widespread, catastrophic river flooding from Florence. "Even though hurricanes are categorized by wind, it's the water that really causes the most loss of life".
