Amazon plans to release at least 8 new Alexa devices, including a microwave oven and in-car gadget

The Alexa-enabled upcoming devices include a microwave own, an amplifier, a receiver, a subwoofer, and an in-car gadget, among others.

To do so, Amazon is launching the Alexa Gadgets Toolkit, a new set of software tools designed for third-party gadgets that connect with Amazon's Echo devices via Bluetooth.

Should we expect to see Amazon try to make more home devices smart? Some of the devices will also have Alexa built in.

Alexa is Amazon's virtual assistant, which competes with Google Assistant.

It's unclear if the new devices will consist exclusively of collaborations between Amazon and other tech manufacturers, or if all of the devices will be made and sold by Amazon. As for what they'll be called, it's likely Amazon will go with entirely new branding to differentiate the home appliances from the Echo series. Companies that are already working on products using Alexa's new capabilities include some of the big names in the toy industry: Hasbro, Baby Plus, TOMY International, eKids and others. Wake word detection and speech sync both seem like particularly intriguing new tools for developers to take advantage of - I'd bet on Amazon's efforts bearing some pretty interesting fruit in the months ahead. Higher-end models provide further flexibility to explore Amazon's offerings beyond Xbox, but as always, these come at a premium.

'We want customers to be able to use Alexa wherever they are, ' Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in the firm's most recent earnings report.

Meanwhile, additional details on these forthcoming smart appliances are extremely slim: CNBC cities only "an internal document" and "people familiar with the matter" before later stating that Amazon declined to comment.
