Woodward's is not the first unflattering investigation into Trump's White House, but it has been particularly resonant coming from the man who together with Carl Bernstein authored the Watergate expose that brought down Richard Nixon.
The explosive op-ed "I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration", supposedly written by a "senior official", declared that numerous "senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of (Trump's) agenda and his worst inclinations".
"Supposing I have a high-level national security, and he has got a clearance, we talked about clearances a lot recently, and he goes into a high-level meeting concerning China or Russian Federation or North Korea or something", he said.

Trump said that it is a disgrace that somebody can publish an anonymous article. He suggested that the writer of the anonymous op-ed may have committed "TREASON?"
"I see no basis for any legitimate referral for an investigation by DoJ", said Patrick Cotter, a former federal prosecutor. "The Times uses phony sources all the time", Trump said.

While Woodward does not name his sources, he says he spoke with many people now or formerly working for Trump, discussing not just the president's personality but also major policy debates regarding North Korea and Afghanistan. He also unleashed on Trump's border wall, lack of emergency response after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and immigration laws.
"What's unfair, I don't mind when they write a book and they make lies because it gets discredited", Mr Trump said.
However, there were no details the identity of the individuals the White House aides have zeroed in on.
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of Cabinet officials to inform Congress that the president is unfit for duty, thereby allowing the vice president to assume the presidency.
