Jamal Khashoggi disappearance: Saudi crown prince 'denies involvement'

A murder claim gives Turkey leverage over Saudi and Trump

His clarification comes after other Turkish news outlets reported that Sabah has obtained a three-minutes video proof that Jamal Khashoggi was inside the Saudi consulate and claims that he was tortured and murdered.

After meeting with King Salman and the crown prince on Tuesday, Pompeo told reporters that Saudi Arabia has committed to conducting a complete investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Saudis have strongly denied the accusations, but United States media outlets have reported that they will acknowledge Khashoggi was killed in a botched interrogation.

The case has put Saudi Arabia under pressure from close allies.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada is very anxious about the disappearance of missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and makes no apologies for pushing a human rights agenda with Saudi Arabia.

In a statement, Pompeo said he "had direct and candid conversations" with the king and the crown prince, as well as Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

Under increasing worldwide pressure, Saudi Arabia is reportedly trying to piece together an alibi over Khashoggi's disappearance.

"They also indicated they would get this done quickly", said Pompeo, adding Saudi also vowed that no-one would have immunity.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said the United States should "sanction the hell out of Saudi Arabia" and slammed the crown prince, known by his initials MBS, as a "toxic" figure. "Saudi Arabia, if you're listening, there are a lot of good people you can choose, but MBS has tainted your country and tainted himself". He said directly that USA punishment "depends [on] whether or not the king or the crown prince knew about it".

"The Saudi government can no longer remain silent, and it is essential that our own government and others push harder for the truth", Ryan added.

The interview was released after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about Khashoggi, who was last seen October 2 entering Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul to fill out paperwork for his upcoming marriage to his Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz.

The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the Saudi plans, reported the crown prince had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia.

Despite the lurid allegations published in media loyal to him, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also taken a circumspect line in the case, saying his priority is to uncover the truth through an investigation.

Meeting King Salman, Pompeo "thanked the king for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent and timely investigation of Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance", Nauert said.
