Comey resists closed-door Congress interview on Federal Bureau of Investigation actions

James Comey and Loretta Lynch subpoenaed to testify in twilight of House Republican power

The House Judiciary Committee has issued subpoenas for James Comey, the former FBI director, and Loretta Lynch, the former attorney general, as part of an investigation into their handling of inquiries into Hillary Clinton's e-mail server and possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director got on Twitter Thursday morning to announce that he has received a Thanksgiving present: a subpoena. "I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions", he said.

Comey tweeted of House Republicans: "I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion".

Comey's firing by President Trump has been a major component of the ongoing investigations into Russia's activities in 2016, and the former FBI chief remains a controversial figure among those who question whether his investigation of Hillary Clinton's email scandal was tainted by bias.

The orders direct Comey to appear on December 3, while Lynch is to appear on December 4, to speak with members of the House Judiciary, and Oversight and Government Reform Committees.

The subpoenas come three weeks before the House Judiciary Committee switches hands.

With Democrats seizing the majority in the House in the midterm elections - and preparing their own wave of subpoenas against Trump administration officials - House Republicans have a short window to press their case against Comey and Lynch. "Let's have a hearing and invite everyone to see", Comey tweeted. He said Comey will resist a closed-door session in court if necessary, CNN reported.

Fearful that the GOP-led panel could leak damaging excerpts from his testimony, Comey has called for the hearing to be conducted in the open, and his lawyer told Fox News that he will fight for this in court.

In a statement to Politico, Goodlatte's office brushed aside the proposal and reiterated the committee stood ready to issue a subpoena if their request was not met. The joint investigation has drawn in senior members of the FBI and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whom several Republican lawmakers want to bring back to Capitol Hill before the year ends.
