Democrat Kyrsten Sinema wins Senate seat after Martha McSally concedes

US Senate candidate Kyrsten Sinema's lead in Arizona is growing

Jeff Flake. Arizona was set to get its first female senator regardless of the election's outcome, and both candidates are barrier-breakers in their own rights.

The Associated Press (AP) declared far-left Democrat Kyrsten Sinema the victor of Arizona's tightly contested Senate race against Republican Rep. Martha McSally.

With 99.8% of precincts reporting, Sinema won 49.7% of the vote to pro-life GOP Rep. Martha McSally's 48%.

Not long after new vote totals showed Sinema leading by over 38,000 votes, McSally issued a statement on Twitter, congratulating Sinema for her upset victory, which will limit overall GOP gains in the Senate. "This is not plausible".

Next year, the Senate will have 47 Democrats (and senators who caucus with the Democrats) and 51 Republicans.

Mississippi's Senate race will be decided by a runoff on November 27, and the race was thrown into turmoil after video surfaced on Sunday of incumbent GOP Sen. "Senator McCain is irreplaceable, but his example will guide our next steps forward", Ms. Sinema said during her victory speech, adding: "He taught us to always assume the best in others, to seek compromise instead of sowing division". Sinema and Democratic groups lambasted McSally's vote for a House GOP bill to repeal Obamacare, which nonpartisan experts said would weaken the Affordable Care Act's protections for those with pre-existing conditions.

McSally's attacks on Sinema reached back more than 15 years, when Sinema was a Green Party spokeswoman and liberal activist. He tweeted on Sunday night that the race "has been over for a while", and expected Arizona to be one of the six swing states that will decide the 2020 presidential election. John McCain, who died this past August.

She shifted to the centre after winning a seat in 2012 in the House of Representatives, drawing criticism from some on the left for siding with Mr Trump and other Republicans on some legislation.

In fact, her 54,000-vote lead over Republican Frank Riggs is larger than the one that Sinema had over McSally. His support of the president's initiatives, however, was mixed.

Coupled with Democratic wins in the Rust Belt and Upper Midwest, Republicans outside the South are finding it tough going.
