By outlasting Gillum, the Tallahassee mayor vying to become Florida's first African-American governor, DeSantis also gave a boost to President Donald Trump, who campaigned for the former congressman at two events in the final days before the election - and whose endorsement DeSantis traded on to win the nomination over the establishment favorite, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

Steve Schale, a longtime Democratic strategist, recounted talking to a reporter 14 years ago about Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Betty Castor's narrow lost to Republican Mel Martinez.

"The great thing about our country is the people have that one day in November where the elites don't call the shots", DeSantis said, TampaBay.com reported.

But for now, Republicans maintain their dominance in Florida - even if by the slimmest of margins.

USA residents are waking up to the midterm election results, in what is a big change for U.S. congress.

The faces of his supporters told their story.

In Georgia, Abrams, 44, was locked in a tight battle with Republican Brian Kemp, the state's secretary of state. Nelson trailed Scott by 0.26 points, or less than 22,000 votes.

"We can not win the state of Florida if we continue hemorrhaging those kinds of margins in red counties", Schale said. "There are voices that are waiting to be heard", Abrams told her supporters in Atlanta.

But Democrats should stop short of blaming their candidate in coming up short.

DeSantis becomes the sixth consecutive Republican elected as Florida governor.

"For Bill Nelson - the task is getting the "win" ... no matter what", a statement from Mr. Scott's camp read. He was a member of the House for a number of years and indeed a member of the leadership considered one of the most promising young politicians in the state.

Gillum conceded the election on November 6 around 11 p.m., about three hours after the polls closed.

Abrams attracted high-profile support from influential talk show host and billionaire philanthropist Oprah Winfrey.

Gilllum said he called DeSantis and congratulated him.

The gubernatorial race is arguably a bigger deal.

Exit polls showed that Gillum won more than six in 10 voters under the age of 45, but those accounted for just 25 percent of the electorate.

Kemp has refused to recuse himself to avoid possible conflict of interest charges.

Democratic Party officials, who have accused Kemp of trying to suppress the minority vote, quickly denied the charge.

Provisional ballots are given to voters because their eligibility to vote is challenged for some reason - perhaps they have an address discrepancy, or they forgot their ID.

Holding his baby son in his arms, and with his two older children at his side, Gillum expressed satisfaction at a campaign he says was run with class and focused on the policy instead of nonsense. The Republican nominee also struggled to explain his alleged association and support from white supremacist groups.

"I still believe and I still trust the voters".
