Jimmy Kimmel Makes a Solid Case for Firing Sarah Huckabee Sanders

Jim Acosta

A White House staff member steps in to try to take the microphone away from CNN's Jim Acosta as he questions U.S. President Donald Trump during a news conference following Tuesday's midterm U.S. congressional elections at the White House in Washington, U.S., November 7, 2018.

Donald Trump has denied suggestions that a White House-released video depicting contact between a staffer and a CNN reporter was not altered, and he seemingly threatened to revoke the White House press credentials of more reporters.

Wednesday's press conference was the first President Donald Trump held after a hard-fought midterms battle in which he harped on the dangers posed by a migrant caravan approaching from Central America.

"The fact that the White House Press Secretary is promoting this doctored video is reprehensible and grounds for dismissal - or, as they call it in the Trump administration, Thursday", Colbert said on The Late Show. Now, a video expert has claimed that the video the White House tweeted in defense of the decision has been doctored to make Acosta look more aggressive.

Trump called one of Phillip's questions "stupid", described Ryan as "a loser" and brushed off Alcindor, saying her question was "racist".

"It's ironic, Jim", she said, "that not only you and the media attack the president for his rhetoric, when they frequently lower the level of conversation in this country".

"I watch you a lot".

If by "respect" Trump means the type of questions that are asked and the way they are asked, the White House is on shaky legal footing.

"I don't know Whitaker", Trump said, adding that he heard Whitaker was "highly thought of" by U.S. ambassador to China and former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad. On Friday, the president signalled he was considering limiting access to other reporters as well.

Despite losing his White House pass, Acosta traveled to Paris this weekend to cover Trump's trip to meet with world leaders.

Trump added that Acosta's treatment of Sanders "is a disgrace".

Many in the media industry were furious with Ms Sanders for sharing the video, including one of Mr Acosta's colleagues.

Ryan isn't the only black female journalist Trump has derided this week. "You shouldn't be working for CNN", Trump said.

One of Trump's most hostile exchanges this week with a reporter of color came when he sparred with Alcindor when she asked Trump whether he worries his rhetoric is emboldening white nationalists. Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders wrote on Twitter that the administration would "never tolerate" such behavior from a reporter, and that it had therefore revoked Acosta's press accreditation.

Several journalists and organisations - including the American Society of News Editors, the Associated Press Media Editors and the Online News Association - demanded Acosta's press pass be reinstated. "They made it close up, they showed it close up".

Acosta's attempts haven't come without criticism and that particular incident earned him a derisive critique from White House advisor Kellyanne Conway.
