US Border Post Reopens Tear Gas Fired As Migrants Flee From Mexico

The deal was seen as a way to dissuade thousands of Central American migrants from seeking asylum in the USA, a process that can take years.

Mexico's incoming interior minister said there was "no agreement of any type between the future government of Mexico and the United States". The government of new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will enter office on December 1.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the Trump administration has won support from the Mexican president-elect's team for a plan dubbed "Remain in Mexico". "Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us".

As hundreds of Central American migrants massed at the border intending to apply for asylum in the United States, all border traffic was halted Sunday at the busy crossing between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said.

Following the publication of the Post's report, however, Sanchez back-pedaled on those remarks.

"We will get work here", she said.

According to the newspaper, the plan was called "Remain in Mexico".

US officials have said for months that they were working with Mexico to find solutions for what they have called a border crisis. "There is no agreement of any sort between the incoming Mexican government and the US government". "All will stay in Mexico", the president wrote. Close to 3,000 migrants took Mexico up on the offer.

With a "safe third country" designation, the United States would consider Mexico a secure nation for receiving asylum applicants. USA officials at the San Ysidro crossing generally accept no more than 100 asylum applications a day.

Migrants from poor Central American countries moving towards the United States in hopes of a better life, walk along the road between Zapopan and Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco, on their trek north, on November 13, 2018.

The upkeep of the migrants has cost Tijuana a hefty sum - almost 550,000 pesos a day [$27,000], mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum said Friday, accusing the government of lackluster response to the crisis and unwillingness to share the burden.

More than 5,000 migrants have been camped in and around a sports complex in Tijuana after making their way through Mexico in caravans.

"The Trump administration should focus on providing a fair and lawful asylum process in the U.S. rather than seeking more ways to undermine it".

Tear gas is said to have been being fired at the migrants from inside the U.S.

Although the press, and in particular CNN, wish to treat this as a concotion of the administration, it seems the thousands of hopeful immigrants in the caravans, and the organizations supporting them, also take the situation very seriously and are taking action on that seriousness.

Alison Leal Parker, U.S. managing director for Human Rights Watch, a New York-based rights organization, said the policy was "a pathetic attempt by the United States to shirk responsibility".

"He sees us as a bug that is going to eat there", she added.

His tweets were interpreted as possible confirmation of the alleged deal between the US and Obrador's administration.

Earlier this month, a federal judge in California halted the Trump administration's latest attempt to seal the USA southern border by barring migrants from seeking asylum inside the country.
