Three states vote to legalize marijuana in midterm election

Michigan, having legalized medicinal use of the drug in 2008, became the tenth state to effectively legalize its recreational use as well Tuesday thanks to a voter-pushed Michigan ballot item in the us midterm elections.

One question asked voters whether they supported a ban on pot retailers in Newton entirely, and the other question asked whether they wanted to limit the number of pot retailers that could open.

In Michigan, the Proposal 1 legalization initiative was winning with 55.8 percent of the vote, with 96 percent of the vote counted as of Wednesday morning.

"Michigan will be the first state in the Midwest to end marijuana prohibition and replace it with a system in which marijuana is regulated for adult use", Marijuana Policy Project deputy director Matthew Schweich, who directed the legalization campaign, said in a statement.

MI became the 10th USA state to legalize recreational pot use, according to CNN and advocates.

Recreational marijuana sales in Canada are expected to generate $4.3-billion in revenue in 2019, or slightly more than 60 per cent of the country's total $7.1-billion marijuana market, which includes medical and illegal sales, consulting firm Deloitte noted.

The law in MI takes effect in about one month.

The Colorado Division of Criminal Justice found that teen use, high school graduation rates and dropout rates have remained flat since Colorado voters approved marijuana legalization in 2012.

Missouri had three marijuana measures on the ballot.

In Missouri, a state constitutional amendment that would legalize the use of medical cannabis was leading 61 percent to 38 percent in early returns, according to the secretary of state's office.

In Florida, 63 percent voted to pass a measure that restores voting rights to 1.5 million former convicts.

Wisconsin held a referendum to ask voters' opinion on legalization of marijuana across 16 counties. Missouri became the 31st state to approve the medical use of marijuana.

At the same time companies ranging from Coca-Cola Co to Corona beer-maker Constellation Brands Inc have taken the first steps into building cannabis-infused products. That makes Michigan's household marijuana cultivation law the least strict out of all of the states.

Voters in Utah have voted "Yes" to Proposition 2 by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent.

In Ohio, six cities had local cannabis decriminalization measures, with five voting in favor of decriminalization.

This could change depending on how the final law is written, but it's what voters approved on Tuesday.
