PM Imran has sought a report after Maulana Sami-ul-Haq's assassination file

ISLAMABAD (AP) - Prominent Pakistani cleric Maulana Samiul Haq, also known as the "father of the Taliban", was killed in a knife attack at his home in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Friday, his family and police said.

Haq ran an Islamic seminary in the north-western Pakistani town of Noshera and was a teacher to most of the Afghan Taliban's leaders, including the militia's founding father, Mullah Omer, said Taliban spokesman Yousaf Shah.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and party president Shehbaz Sharif also condemned Haq's assassination. The prime minister said Maulana Sami-ul-Haq was a great scholar of Islam. In a statement, he said Maulana Sami-ul-Haq s political and religous services will be remembered.

Sami ul Haq was known as the spiritual father of Taliban.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility behind the assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the killing of Maulana Samiul Haq and said that serious action would be taken against the killers.

Former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal said the awful news of the assassination was very tragic.

His seminary is in the Akora Khattak in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.

The news of his death comes at a sensitive time, with religio-political parties out on the streets protesting the Supreme Court's acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case.

Prime Minister Imran Khan's party had sought to work closely with him to implement various reforms and mainstream madrassah education.
