Both men have reportedly heard the charges against them and will be held for three-months.

China is highly concerned over the issue, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press office said in a faxed response to questions.

"A Pole and a Chinese citizen have been arrested on suspicion of spying. Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based", it continued.

Last Tuesday (8 January), ABW counterintelligence officers entered the homes of both suspects and secured documents and electronic data at the premises of Huawei Poland, the Office of Electronic Communications and Orange Poland.

It's the latest high-profile criminal case for Huawei, coming after Canada's arrest of its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of the telecom equipment company's founder.

The European Commission will seek information from Poland after national authorities arrested this week a Chinese Huawei employee and a Polish national over espionage allegations. Local media identified the Chinese man as a Huawei director.

Huawei, the world's biggest producer of telecom equipment, faces intense scrutiny in the West over its relationship with the Chinese government and US -led allegations that its equipment could be used by Beijing for spying.

Huawei didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

But the criticism has led several Western countries and companies to look into whether they should allow Huawei's equipment to be used in their telecoms networks, straining relations with Beijing.

"ABW (Internal Security Agency) officials conducted actions, as a result of which, we handed over belongings of one of our employees", Orange Polska said in a statement.

Orange told the AP it did not know if the suspicions against its employee were related to his professional duties and that it was working with the country's security agency. The company has been blocked in the US since 2012 over fears that its equipment is a security risk, and a year ago Australia, New Zealand and Japan instituted their own bans against using Huawei.
