Spacey Appears In Court For Sexual Assault Case Involving Busboy In Nantucket

Kevin Spacey

Kevin Spacey pleaded not guilty Monday to groping an 18-year-old busboy in 2016 in the first criminal case brought against the disgraced actor following a string of sexual misconduct allegations that crippled his career.

His representative, Alan Jackson, successfully argued that the alleged victim's phone records be preserved because they could benefit Spacey's case. The next court date is scheduled for March 4, when a pretrial hearing will be held. Spacey will not be required to appear at that pre-trial hearing, as long as he is available by phone, the judge ruled.

Spacey then allegedly invited him back to his place, along with some other friends.

Mexican actor Roberto Cavazos, who performed in several Old Vic productions, said "it seems that it only took a male under 30 to make Mr Spacey feel free to touch us".

The civil attorney for the accuser said in a statement ahead of the hearing that his client is "leading by example" by coming forward.

In addition to the Nantucket case, two other investigations are underway in Los Angeles and London, where Spacey served as artistic director of the prestigious Old Vic theater from 2004 to 2015. His lawyer is claiming these records are proof that Spacey did not assault the victim in a Nantucket bar.

The court appearance comes after perhaps the strangest response that any celebrity has had to the recent wave of assault allegations.

Spacey had asked the court to excuse him from appearing at Monday's arraignment, saying his presence would "amplify negative publicity" around the case. A judge disagreed with Spacey's argument and ordered him to attend the arraignment. If convicted, Spacey will reportedly be imprisoned for up to five years.

The accuser's mother told reporters in November 2017 that Spacey got her son drunk and then grabbed his genitals.

Spacey's first accuser, actor Anthony Rapp, claimed Spacey had climbed on top of him on a bed in 1986 when Rapp was 14 and Spacey 26.

On Christmas Eve, Spacey posted a video contesting allegations against him.

The BBC's Nada Tawfik said from the Nantucket courthouse that the criminal charges against Spacey mark one of the most stunning downfalls of the #MeToo movement.

In that video, titled "Let Me Be Frank", Spacey spoke in character as his House of Cards persona Frank Underwood, addressing the camera as he stood in a kitchen wearing a Santa Claus apron.
