In a follow-up interview with police, Smollett also told investigators that he heard attackers shout "MAGA country".

According to TMZ, the actor was beat up by two men around 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning, after he went to get some food at Subway.

The pair later fled the scene.

Despite reportedly suffering a fractured rib during the attack, Smollett was said to be in "good condition", according to a statement from the Chicago police that was obtained by HuffPost editor Philip Lewis. The FBI has since taken over the probe into the letter - as it was sent through the US mail service - while Chicago police continue to look into the attack, authorities said.

In a news release issued Wednesday, the Chicago Police Department sought the public's help identifying two subjects who were walking on New Street near Illinois Street between 1:30 a.m. and 1:45 a.m.
