Detained Bahraini soccer player Hakeem al Araibi arrives at the criminal court in Bangkok Thailand

Dissident Bahraini soccer player Hakeem al-Araibi, photographed Feb.4 as he left court in Bangkok, was released a week later after prosecutors said they were no longer seeking his extradition to Bahrain.

Thailand's attorney general's office has dropped the extradition case against the jailed footballer who plays for Pascoe Vale FC in Melbourne and has refugee status in Australia, a prosecution source said.

The player's Australia lawyer Latifa Al-Haouli of Sabelberg Morcos Lawyers, told SBS News on Monday legal staff were working with Thailand's department of corrections to secure Mr Al-Araibi's return to Australia.

Al-Araibi has been in a Bangkok jail since November, after being arrested while on honeymoon due to an Interpol notice issued at Bahrain's request.

On social network Twitter, former Australia soccer captain Craig Foster, who had helped lobby officials at world governing body Federation Internationale de Football Association, said, "My thanks go to the wonderful people of Thailand for your support and to the Thai government for upholding worldwide law".

Morrison said he was "pleased" with the outcome and thanked the Thai government, as well as Australian football identity Craig Foster for his advocacy on the case.

"We have been informed that Bahrain wants to withdraw the (extradition) request".

New York-based Human Rights Watch has said Araibi was tortured by Bahraini authorities because of his brother's political activities during the 2011 protests. Araibi denies the charges, saying he was playing in a televised soccer match at the time of the police station attack.

It still remains unclear when Bahrain withdrew its extradition request.

Bahrain wanted its former national team player to return and serve a 10-year prison sentence that was handed down in absentia after he was accused of vandalising a police station.

Bahrain continues to face fierce criticism from human rights organizations.
