Halep made to work before beating Goerges to reach Qatar Open semi-finals

Top seed Simona Halep came back from 4-1 down in the deciding set to beat Elina Svitolina 6-3 3-6 6-4 in the Qatar Open semi-final on Friday, marking her first victory over the Ukrainian in almost two years.

Halep, the top seed in the competition, defeated Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in her semi-final of this WTA Premier tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

After both players dropped their opening service game, Halep took control of the encounter by winning 18 consecutive points from 3-3 to clinch the first set.

Goerges threatened with an early break in the second set, but Halep's relentless accuracy from the baseline proved the difference as the Romanian closed out the win in just more than two hours.

Over the course of the match, Halep played some quality tennis and for most of the time, she was the superior player.

"She moved very well and she hit the ball strong".

Halep tried to rally, but at 5-3 and appearing to be hampered by an injury, she lost her serve, handing Mertens a famous victory.

A rapid exchange of passes opened up a chance for Maddison, prompting Jan Vertonghen to rashly bundle over the midfielder. His first kick of the match was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris , but Puel had no issue with Vardy taking it.

With 33 of his own and 17 assists, he has played a role in more goals than any team-mate since his debut in September 2015. This is the first time the France worldwide has bagged a double-figure goal tally in the league so far in his career.

The Cavaliers will also continue to look elsewhere as they seek to rebuild a team that now stands at 11-43 on the year. Shumpert is a free agent after this season, so they procure a pick rather than risk him walk away for nothing.

Mertens' victory was the second time this week she has beaten a player in the top 10, having dispatched world No. 8 Kiki Bertens in the quarterfinals.

Kerber got back on serve at 4-3, but victor after winner came off the racket of Mertens and she broke for a second time to take the opening set.

Third seed Angelique Kerber battled back from a set down to oust Barbora Strycova.

The Romanian will now play her 34th career final and will rise to the rank of number two in the world whatever the result. She also made the semifinals of the Australian Open.

"Tennis is full of surprises", the unseeded Belgian said, after beating Angelique Kerber on Friday. However, given the way Mertens is playing, there is a very good possibility that it can go either way. The final will be played in Doha on Saturday, February 16, at 6 pm local time (3 pm BST) and the Halep v Mertens live streaming options can be found below.

Muchova, who has enjoyed a breakthrough week to reach her first WTA Tour quarter-final, was undone by her 25 unforced errors, allowing Svitolina to clinch an 82-minute victory.

But Mertens broke back, then called for medical attention and was the stronger player for the remainder of the game. "It's been a really tough match and it is always tough to play against her". I didn't know much about her or her style. "I think I just came up with the right shots at the right time", added the Belgian.
