Mavericks to acquire Porzingis for Smith, Jordan, Matthews

What we do know is that Doncic has to be thrilled to have Porzingis in Dallas with him.

Smith, a point guard drafted ninth overall by Dallas in 2017, is averaging 12.9 points and 4.3 assists this season. In the meantime, they have young pieces such as Smith and 2018 first-round pick Kevin Knox.

The 7-foot-3 Latvian's name surfaced in trade rumors this week nearly immediately after news broke that New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis had requested a trade. "When you're trying to think about how you want to build your team for the long term, you don't want to commit a max (contract) to a player who clearly says to you he doesn't want to be here", Mills said. Not what the Pelicans will be able to get for Anthony Davis, but certainly more than what they got from Dallas.

But the two did not mesh particularly well when they shared the court.

Without Porzingis, who is recovering from an ACL injury, the Knicks have the worst record in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

Australian Open: Rafael Nadal, Petra Kvitova through to semifinals
He's been reluctant to go into detail about a recent tweak he made to his serve, saying it's "nothing drastic, nothing dramatic". As usual, Tiafoe was animated and talkative Tuesday. "Take as long as you want, Rafa", shouted one fan.

Of course, the February game that saw Porzingis' demise was ultimately his last time in a Knicks uniform.

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Knicks will also receive a future first-rounder.

Porzingis is set to become a restricted free agent this July. Already, there's conflicting information on his intentions in Dallas: The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that Porzingis plans to sign the one-year qualifying offer this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent after the 2019-20 season.

Had Porzingis fielded offers from other teams this summer, he'd be looking at a major pay day, forcing the Mavericks to either match an offer sheet or lose Porzingis entirely. But Smith and two nebulous future first-round picks feels like selling low. But they declined to give him a contract extension before this season - they say he was in agreement with that decision - and now by trading him and Hardaway seem instead to be gearing up to pursue players in free agency, with almost $70 million in cap space.
