NYT Enemy of People

Mr. Whitaker knew Mr. Berman could not reverse his recusal, causing Mr. Trump to become frustrated with his acting attorney general, the Times reported.

The publisher of The New York Times excoriated President Donald Trump Wednesday after the commander in chief declared the newspaper the "true enemy of the people" in light of a report - filled with unknown anonymous sources - about his alleged attempts to interfere in ongoing criminal investigations.

Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane has the latest from Washington.

The report sparked concern from Democratic lawmakers, who said it conflicted with Whitaker's statements to the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee earlier this month that Trump never attempted to meddle in any investigation.

"The phrase 'enemy of the people" is not just false, it's risky. Cohen said they were made "in coordination and at the direction" of Trump.

The president also tweeted his feelings about the report, calling the Times "a true enemy of the people".

"As I have repeatedly told President Trump face to face, there are mounting signs that this incendiary rhetoric is encouraging threats and violence against journalists at home and overseas", Sulzberger said, without providing evidence.

IEA says Venezuela crisis risks disrupting global crude market
Venezuela's output is already at the lowest in decades as a spiraling economic crisis takes its toll on oil infrastructure. It said OPEC crude output was 930 thousand b/d lower in January at 30.83 million b/d, hitting a almost four-year low.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation and whether the president obstructed the investigation. They say Trump directed his personal lawyer Michael Cohen to make illegal hush-money payments to two women as a way to quash potential sex scandals during the campaign.

McCabe, a longtime and frequent target of Trump's anger, was sacked on March 2018 by then-U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions - just two days before his planned retirement date.

"It was remarkable to me that we were in a time that the leader of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the leader of the Department of Justice, certainly with respect to this investigative effort, that we were having conversations that would include mentions of things like the 25th Amendment", McCabe said.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and attacked the Mueller probe.

Johnston then added that when Trump is no longer president he must be "indicted and, if convicted by a jury, imprisoned", or else he will continue to condone acts of violence and smear law enforcement agencies as "not legitimate".

Cohen, 52, was sentenced in December to three years in prison after pleading guilty to lying to the Senate intelligence committee and campaign finance violations.

"I have a lot of respect for Mr. Whitaker, I think he's done a great job, he's a very, very straight shooter I watched him during the hearing", said President Trump.
