State of the Union: Here's What to Expect from President Trump

President Trump: Democrats do nothing to secure border, national emergency still possible

In his first State of the Union address to a divided Congress, President Donald Trump warned Democrats on Tuesday that "ridiculous partisan investigations" could derail the nation's economic progress.

The President addressed his policy agenda for the coming year and reiterated last year's appeal for bipartisanship, but the prospect of a government shutdown will not be completely behind him. Delivering the speech at the midway point of a three-week reprieve, his message will be colored by the prospect of yet another shutdown. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was praised by Democrats for her hard-line negotiating during the shutdown, sat behind Trump as he spoke.

Shutdown plans? A national emergency?

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States would build a "human wall" along the border with Mexico if it can not construct a physical barrier.

And he has teased a potential announcement during the State of the Union address.

The tilt towards business' cheap-labor priorities could emerge from the President's effort to portray a sense of national unity, Vaughan said. "And then you'll see what happens right after the State of the Union".

There will be no better indication of the dramatic swing in the balance of power in Washington than the presence of Pelosi.

Despite a temporary end to the shut-down, tensions are still high as both Pelosi and Trump prepare their respective parties to reach an agreement to permanently end the shut-down.

Before launching into border security and the shutdown, Trump is expected to lead with his take on what is going right (or well) under his presidency, namely the economy and low unemployment rate.

And instead of majorities in the House and Senate, the President will face a majority of Democratic lawmakers during his speech - a makeup that is sure to swing the applause-o-meter and amplify the sense of political division around the country.

Also, GOP legislators are urging the President to back away from his dramatic threat to build a wall via his orders to agencies. What lines will prompt applause from Sens. "Obviously it's the most diverse class we've inaugurated in the House, in particular, so I think she'll proudly own that and will refer to what America looks like today in the 21st century and what our collective issues are".

As many as two dozen Democrats are eager to challenge Trump as their party's nominee; about 10 have already declared their candidacies.

The source said: "He's going to set the stage". It's nearly a sure bet that the wall, which has become his signature policy proposal, will be prominently featured in his speech, said Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Northeastern. Earlier today, the White House released the special guests of the evening. After Pelosi and the lawmakers made a decision to fly commercial instead, the Trump administration denied them military support and instructed them to get permission from Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House Chief of Staff. Pelosi called this a "complete violation of separation of powers". "If we had a real Wall, this would be a non-event!", Trump said in a Twitter post.

Trump's address amounted to an opening argument for his re-election campaign.

The president's second State of the Union Address is titled "Choosing Greatness", and it will cover five major topics. "But I know, YOU want me to speak", Trump wrote in an email to his campaign's distribution list.
