Joaqin Guzman, the notorious Mexican drug cartel boss known under nickname "El Chapo" is to face life in jail after a United States court found him guilty on all charges in a high-profile narcotics trial.

Guzman is believed to have led the cartel for decades, and faced a total of 17 charges, including including operating a continuing criminal enterprise conspiring to murder rivals and money laundering.

In the trial, which has lasted several months, prosecutors used more than 50 witnesses to detail Guzman's involvement in making billions of dollars distributing drugs in the U.S.

The 61-year-old Guzman broke out of Mexican prisons twice before he was finally recaptured and extradited to the U.S.in 2017.

Guzman spoke in the courtroom only once during the trial, saying he would not testify in his own defense, NBC News reported. Guzman smiled and waved, and she touched her hand to her chest.

Guzman's lawyers say he was set up as a "fall guy" by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a powerful drug lord from Sinaloa who remains at large.

The verdict came on the sixth day of the jury's deliberations. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected previous year after promising a change, suggesting a negotiated peace and amnesty for non-violent drug dealers, traffickers, and farmers.

The notorious former leader of the dreaded Sinaloa Cartel has been the subject of numerous TV shows and films, including Univision's series El Chapo, a recent Netflix documentary with the same title that was ridiculed by Sean Penn, Netflix's Narcos: Mexico and documentary The Day I Met El Chapo with Kate del Castillo.

Despite Guzman's downfall, the Sinaloa Cartel still has the biggest US distribution presence of Mexican cartels, followed by the fast-growing Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

The prosecution's case against Guzman, a roughly 5½-foot figure whose nickname translates to "Shorty", included the testimony of former associates and other witnesses.
