Democrats Expand Investigations into Donald Trump Targeting His Family and Businesses

Chairman Jerrold Nadler says over 60 entities and individuals close to White House are getting document requests from House Judiciary Committee Monday

The House Judiciary Committee has the power to impeach President Trump.

Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, longtime Trump personal assistant Rhona Graff, former White House chief of staff John Kelly and ex-White House counsel Don McGahn are also on the list of names released by the committee.

Since taking power in the wake of November's midterm elections, House Democrats have vowed to investigate Trump's presidency and business as they await the special counsel Robert Mueller investigation's findings.

Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said on Monday the investigation will be focused on possible obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power.

The justice department head also noted attempts by the U.S. president to intimidate witnesses in the course of the investigation, according to The Independent.

The letter follows another from last month, in which the three chairmen cited a report that Trump had seized his translator's notes after a meeting with Putin and taken other steps to restrict information about his meetings with Russia's president.

"We're far from making decisions" about impeachment, he said.

In building a case against the 45th United States president, Nadler pointed to Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, while the latter was in the process of investigating whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Other demands for documents are directed to institutions including the White House, the Justice Department, the Trump campaign, the Trump transition team and the Trump Organisation.

Trump has met with Putin five times since he was sworn in, including at least once when no other American was present.

The chairmen of the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees wrote to the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seeking documents and interviews with personnel about Trump's conversations with Putin.

McCarthy also lashed out at House Democrats for bringing former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify on the same day Trump was in Vietnam to meet North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

The list, which asks for materials concerning possible obstruction of justice by the president, or possible conspiracy between Trump associates and Russian officials, marks the opening salvo of what some expect to be a fight between Congress and the Justice Department over Mueller's files.

Several committees are probing related matters as well, and while many might overlap, the committee chairmen and chairwomen say they are working together on the investigations.

Democrats are now in control of the House of Representatives, with Republicans holding the Senate.

Nadler had said Sunday on ABC News that his committee was planning on issuing the document requests, and that Weisselberg and the White House would be included, but declined to provide additional specifics. "He tried to protect Flynn from being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump blasted Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, calling it a partisan probe unfairly aimed at discrediting his win in the 2016 presidential election.
