Allison Mack pleads guilty to racketeering in Nxivm case

Allison Mack

Smallville star Allison Mack pleaded guilty on Monday to charges surrounding her involvement in a sex slave cult that masqueraded as a self-help group called NXIVM. Mack was arrested by federal authorities previous year, and prosecutors allege that she recruited women to be sex slaves for the group's founder, Keith Raniere.

The freaky story of Smallville actress Allison Mack's involvement in alleged "sex cult" NXIVM took a new turn on Monday. The group allegedly consisted of female "slaves" headed by "masters", and often involved the women being branded with Raniere's initials.

In earlier submissions to the court, she admitted to being part of DOS, but contended in court documents that no one's collateral was ever released, that she never received any money from her participation in the group and that she "never instructed anyone to partake in a sex act, and did not even know that the alleged sex acts were occurring".

Mack, who appeared Monday at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District, in Brooklyn, previously pleaded not guilty on charges including sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and forced labor.

Mack played Chloe Sullivan, a close friend of the future Superman whose crush on him was unrequited.

Mack was arrested in April 2018 and charged for her alleged involvement with an organization called Nxivm, a group that claimed to be a self-help program but was, in reality, a pyramid scheme in which some recruits were exploited "both sexually and for their labor, to the defendants' benefit", according to USA attorney Richard P. Donoghue. Mack's defense attorneys, meanwhile and according to Fox News, continue to argue that the alleged victims in this case "were not abused" (that's an odd approach after a defendant has already claimed authorship of a branding ritual).

Raniere, 57, was arrested in March, 2018. Online notes that if convicted, Allison could face 20 years of prison for each count she is charged with.
