Bernie Sanders to release tax returns by Monday

Former vice president Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders

Pete Buttigieg, the little-known IN mayor who has risen to prominence IN the early stages of the 2020 Democratic presidential race, made his official campaign entrance Sunday by claiming the mantle of a youthful generation ready to reshape the country.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who has faced pressure over when he would release his tax returns, said Tuesday he intends to do so by April 15.

It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Buttigieg: The mayor has crisscrossed the country looking to seize on the boost he received from a well-reviewed CNN town hall in early March, hopscotching between early nominating states and a string of fundraisers in Democratic strongholds like San Francisco, Chicago and NY.

"It is time to walk away from the politics of the past, and toward something totally different", Buttigieg, 37, told thousands gathered inside a former Studebaker vehicle assembly plant in South Bend, Ind.

The scene for Buttigieg's rally was a hulking former Studebaker assembly plant, whose closure decades ago rocked this region's economy. Don't knock down our communities, give us help. The Chinese social media posts on Buttigieg that do exist appear to have so far drawn largely admiring and supportive reactions, mixed with occasional homophobic comments.

"There is a myth being sold to industrial and rural communities: the myth that we can stop the clock and turn it back", Buttigieg said.

The fascination has been in no small part due to his background: he would be the youngest, first openly gay, first millennial and first mayor to become president.

With a name that's challenging to pronounce (boot-edge-edge, or Buddha-judge as the candidate's husband has suggested), Buttigieg has been traveling through early primary and caucus states and sitting for just about any television interview he can find.

Since his announcement, the campaign says Buttigieg has raised an additional one million dollars.

But Buttigieg has moved from a footnote to a contender, increasing the chances of being a national figure in 2020 even if he's not the nominee.

As rain fell on this city of about 100,000 people Sunday morning, thousands lined up under umbrellas and bundled up in jackets, waiting to enter the facility, holding homemade signs and carrying coffee cups and copies of his book, "Shortest Way Home".

"He's done a lot for us in South Bend", Faccenda said. "He's got this ability to help people deep down in his bones".

His challenge: finding a way to sustain the momentum over the long term and avoiding becoming a "flavor-of-the-month" candidate.

The mayor is the 18th Democrat to officially declare a White House candidacy and would be the youngest and first openly gay US president, if elected.

Indeed, a Democratic co-sponsor of an earlier version of Sanders' bill was among those having second thoughts. Sen. Buttigieg ranked third at 9 percent, outperforming a slew of USA senators and other hopefuls.

"And if the VP, I'm not interested in feuding with the vice president, but if he wanted to clear this up, he could come out today and say he's changed his mind that it shouldn't be legal to discriminate against anybody in this country for who they are", Buttigieg said. "He has tried to be a healer, to be inclusive, but it hasn't always been easy".
