U.S. Secret Service director Randolph Alles leaving position

President Donald Trump sacks Secret Service boss Randolph Alles

Trump had told his acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney to fire Alles two weeks ago, marking the latest top official to be forced out of their position during the tumultuous administration.

He reports to the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned Sunday. But Alles' unfamiliarity with the agency led to conflicts, said the officials. CNBC added, "White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says, adding that President Donald Trump "has selected James M. Murray, a career member of the USSS, to take over as director beginning in May".

The Secret Service also came under scrutiny last week after a Chinese woman carrying electronic devices bluffed her way through security checks at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

The White House confirmed Mr Alles - who reported directly to Ms Nielsen - would go, but did not say whether Mr Trump fired him.

The Secret Service is responsible for protecting senior USA officials including the president and vice president, former presidents and visiting heads of state.

"I could not be happier with Secret Service", Trump said on Wednesday when asked about the breach by reporters.

Alles' departure comes at a time of high turnover across the department which began last week when Trump withdrew his Immigration and Customs Enforcement director's nomination to stay on permanently. "Very happy with them".

One anonymous official tells CNN that the Trump White House is undergoing something close to a full cleansing of people working at important national security positions. The Associated Press reported that Nielsen had been frustrated with the difficulty of getting other departments to help to deal with the growing number of families crossing the border.

Per the report, DHS General Counsel John Mitnick and U.S. Citizienship and Immigration Services Director Francis Cissna "are expected to be gone soon". The director oversees the Secret Service's work on both protection and investigations.
